Wakehurst Rugby Juniors (U10 – Opens)
Players in age groups from U6 all the way through to U18 play to modified laws that are adapted to allow for progressive development of the player.
The philosophy of the modified laws is focused around the player, making the game safer to ensure each player receives the greatest possible participation and enjoyment from playing the game of rugby.
The aim of the modified rugby game is to develop the individual skills, fitness and team work of all players in accordance with their physical maturity and understanding of the game.
TryRugby Kids Pathway for U6 – U12 players provides a series of age-specific modified rugby games.
U10 – U12
These age groups also follow the Pathway requirements that have been developed to increase activity levels for maximum participation and enjoyment. The Pathway provides an integrated and consistent approach to the development of U6 to U12 players, coaches and referees nationally.
U13 – Opens
Australian U19 Law Variations apply from U13 – Opens (U17 – U18) and follow on from the TryRugby Kid’s Pathway, continuing the progression of players rugby skills and development. The U13 – Opens age groups include junior representative opportunities at District , school and regional levels. Through these diverse age ranges the priority is to provide the players with opportunities to learn.
In 2024 the Wakehurst Junior Rugby teams are broken down into the following age groups and the players age on the 1st January 2024:
- Under 10s – Born in 2014
- Under 11s – Born in 2013
- Under 12s – Born in 2012
- Under 13s – Born in 2011
- Under 14s – Born in 2010
- Under 15s – Born in 2009
- Under 16s – Born in 2008
- Opens – Born in either 2007 or 2006
*Note: Dispensation can be requested to play in a younger age group, mainly dependant on weight and height.
The Juniors teams compete in the Sydney Juniors Rugby Union Competition. Teams, as a whole, are graded on their capabilities and prior year’s results. Games are typically played on Sunday mornings but can also be held on Friday nights.
All our Junior teams use the TeamStuff app/website for all communications as well as maintaining up-to-date details for each game and training session.
Competition Details (2024)
A draft version of the Competition details for 2024 has been published by Sydney Juniors. This year the 1st 2 rounds will be in a gala format of 3 x 20 halves in one location per age group. This will allow SJRU to review the Grades for the team and also undertake any dispensation requests.
In 2019 we undertook a major Upgrade to our lighting at the club so the club has requested that we have the option to play our Home Games on Friday Evenings!

Trial Games (2024)
There are typically trial games planned for the Junior Teams on the two Sundays prior to Round 1.
Trail Game 1 – 11th March
Trail Game 2 – 20th March

Training
Training for all Wakehurst Juniors teams is usually held every Wednesday evening from 6pm onwards (age group dependant) at the Wakehurst Rugby Park. Training commences on Wednesday 23rd February
Parents are able to either enjoy a refreshment in the clubhouse while the kids train.

Junior Rules/Laws
The Sydney Juniors Rugby Union plays under the ARU’s Kids Pathway Laws which have been developed with a focus on safety and increased activity levels for maximum participation and enjoyment.
The Pathway provides an integrated and consistent approach to the development of U6 to U12 players, coaches and referees nationally.
